FAQ
Are Segways safe? Will I fall off?
Yes, Segways are very safe! The Segway PT is programmed to do everything possible to keep you safe. There are several built in safety features to make sure that you and the other guests will be safe. Also, prior to every tour and rental there is a 30 minute training session. Our experienced guides will personally work with you to make sure you are comfortable on the Segway PT. We will also pace the tour to the level of comfort of our guests.

I’ve ridden a Segway before - do I still have to complete the training?
Yes. Segway of Boston appreciates that you have riding experience and it may make your training session go quicker, but every customer’s safety is our responsibility and the training sessions are mandatory.
How old do you have to be?
The age limit on a Segway PT is fourteen years old to go on a guided tour (16 for rentals). The reason for this is the sensors in the Segway PT will only function properly if the rider is between 100 to 260 pounds. We do everything we can to ensure the safety of our guests.
Are there physical requirements necessary to ride a Segway?
Use the following guidelines to determine whether you will be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to operate a Segway PT safely:
-
Must be able to step on and off the Segway without assistance, which has an 8 inch step height and which requires physical abilities similar to climbing and descending stairs without the support of a handrail or other walking aid
-
Must be able to stand for designated periods of time, taking into consideration the duration of the tour or rental you are selecting
Unfortunately, pregnant women are not allowed to ride.

Do your run tours in the rain?
While in most cases we will ride in sprinkles or light showers, we do reserve the right to cancel a tour if we deem conditions to be unsafe for riding a Segway PT.
How do I make a reservation?
Reservations for our daily tours are made directly with the Museum of Science. You can order by phone at 617.723.2500, online at
store.mos.org, or in person at the Museum box office.
For rentals and custom events, call or email us your requests at 617.225.002 or
bostontours@segwayofboston.com and we’d be happy to make your reservation for you.
Can I bring my camera/phone/backpack with me on the tour?
Our Segways are equipped with handlebar bags, in which you should be able to carry your phone or camera or wallet while on tour. There are photo opportunities along the way! However, we prefer that our guests leave any bags or backpacks securely in our office or lockers.
Do I have to wear a helmet?
Yes! At Segway of Boston, safety is our first priority, and as such, we require not only that our guests wear helmets (provided by us), but that our tour guides do as well.
What can I wear while riding a Segway PT?
While the only thing we require in order to ride the Segway PT is flat, closed-toed/backed shoes (no flip-flops, sorry!), we recommend that excessively loose, dangling clothing (including scarves, skirts and dresses that may billow, long, dangling necklaces, etc.) be avoided, as there is a chance of loose clothing being caught in the machine.
Dress weather appropriate! Don’t forget sunscreen in the summer. In cooler weather, you may find the ride chilly – gloves or mittens are recommended as well as warm clothing. Be careful of scarves and remember that you still have to wear a helmet!
Is it difficult to communicate while on a Segway PT?
Not at all! At Segway of Boston, we are equipped with push-to-talk radios, which we provide for all guests on tours. This will allow the tour guide to talk seamlessly with you during the tour and point out sites along the way, and also allow you to communicate with the guide if needed.
Can I rent a Segway PT and go out by myself?
Yes. But with all tours and rentals we require you to complete our half-hour training session and wear a helmet.
Where are you located?
Our offices are located at 510 Kendall Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Remember – the boarding location for our tours is at the Museum of Science, 1 Science Park, Boston – just a couple minutes from our office!
How do I get there?
We are less than 5 minutes walking distance of the Kendall Square T stop on the Red Line and next door to the Kendall Square Parking Garage for those guests arriving by car.
